Afterschool and School Enrichment Programs

4-H Afterschool and School Enrichment Programs is a special focus area within the California 4-H Youth Development Program. We partner with community youth-serving agencies to support quality afterschool environments. We provide support to existing afterschool programs in the following ways:

Conducting staff development opportunities for afterschool line staff
Providing research-based “hands on” curriculum

Afterschool 4-H Clubs

The Afterschool 4-H clubs follow the same guidelines as community clubs. Members are individually enrolled and meet separately from a school's existing afterschool program. Please see the 4-H Club page for more information.

Tools of the Trade I - Giving Kids a Lifetime Guarantee

Tools of the Trade I contains 15 hours of staff development for frontline afterschool staff. This curriculum contains training on program and youth management topics such as ages and stages, guidance and discipline, parents as partners, program management and teens as teachers. Each session provides complete instructions, readily available supplies and session evaluations.

Tools of the Trade II - Inspiring Young Minds to be SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) Ready for Life!

Tools of the Trade II contains over 21 hours of training for frontline staff on incorporating science, engineering and technology in afterschool settings. This curriculum uses a hands-on, interactive approach. Each session provides complete instructions, readily available supplies and session evaluations.

After-school Resource Guide—Teens as Volunteer Leaders

This resource guide is one of a series developed by Florida 4-H Youth Development Program, UF/IFAS Extension. It is designed to be used by Extension professionals who wish to deliver teen-led cross-age teaching in after-school programs. It draws from curricula, ideas, and information available throughout the Cooperative Extension System.

School Enrichment Programs

School enrichment programs allow youth to receive 4-H Youth Development Program curricula or other educational materials in a group or classroom during school hours. 4-H also provides training for teachers in a variety of topics, ranging from positive youth development to effective learning models and methods to specific curriculum.

'Ag in the Classroom,' a 4-H School Enrichment Program, is a program coordinated with school personnel that uses select 4-H learning materials as well as California Ag in the Classroom curriculum as part of the school curriculum during school hours. The program includes one or more sessions with activities led by 4-H Youth Development Program staff, volunteers, and teachers.
