4-H Delivers
Sewing for the Community
Three organizations in Riverside County, The California Family Life Center, Valley Restart Homeless Shelter and Hemet Valley Medical Center requested fleece hats so they could provide warm hats for people in the community with limited resources.
What has 4-H Done?:
The Ramona Rancheros 4-H Sewing Project decided to adopt this simple sewing project to hone new sewing skills while also fulfilling a need in the community. The California Family Life Center provided the hats for foster children attending their winter camp. Valley Restart Homeless Shelter gave them to children who stayed in their shelter. And finally baby hats were given to Hemet Valley Medical Center for new mothers. Once the group had gained experience from this simple sewing project, they went on to expand their skills by joining a statewide effort, Operation Cover Up, sewing children's hospital gowns.
The Payoff:
The group provided a much need service to those in need in their community by making 130 fleece hats and 15 children's hospital gowns. The service project encouraged the group to sew more, fostered friendship among group members and helped them further develop teamwork skills.
