Grenada Citizenship Project Retires Old Flags
The Issue
The 4-Hers of the Grenada Citizenship Project knew very little about the history and ceremonies behind the American flag. However, after discovering the need in their community for a proper flag retirement ceremony, they set out to learn about the American flag and how to give it a respectful retirement. The community of Siskiyou County had not had a group providing flag retirement in over ten years, and old flags had built up over time. What Did 4-H Do?
The Grenada Citizenship Project created displays and drop-off locations for various sites throughout the county. Press releases, radio announcements, and other advertisements publicized their goals as they prepared to receive around 40 flags. However, they soon had collected over 100 flags to be retired! The Payoff
A local military group was invited to play Taps at the ceremony, and local and state dignitaries were invited to the retirement ceremony, as well as all community members. Two flags were featured at the ceremony, with the rest being retired properly afterward. The group won a Golden Clover award in the category of Luella Zamzow Spirit of Citizenship for their community spirit, patriotism, and citizenship.Author: Annalee Sanborn, Student Assistant, State 4-H Office
