Your service learning project will require careful planning – from the initial work to identify a compelling community issue to the final celebration of its completion. Use this Toolkit to help you carry out the important steps necessary to ensure success. Each section offers tips, templates, links to helpful resources, and suggested guidelines that will support your efforts.

Your project has the potential to:

  • Build strong community partnerships
  • Leverage additional funding and donations of time and expertise
  • Attract new volunteers and advocates
  • Create positive visibility for 4-H at the local and statewide level

Project Planning

There are many steps to consider when planning a successful service learning project – identifying an issue or community need, creating a plan to address that need, developing a timeline, budget, and assignments for your plan, and evaluating the impact of your project.  The resources in this section provide the tools needed for 4-H members and adult volunteers to take a project from the idea stage to completion.

Marketing and Communication

It’s time to put your service learning project in the spotlight! Use these marketing strategies and sample materials to share your progress, celebrate your success, tell your story, and demonstrate your commitment to making a positive impact in your community. You’ll find helpful tips for working with the media, communicating your message clearly, implementing a social media strategy, and engaging your community.

When contemplating raising funds to support your 4-H service learning project, knowing how and where to begin can seem daunting. This toolkit is designed to help you move to the next level in fundraising with helpful resources that will help you to identify potential donors, develop a funding request, hone your presentation skills when meeting with potential supporters, and more.

Alumni Relations

4-H Alumni are critical to supporting and sustaining 4-H programs – they understand 4-H and have reaped benefits from being connected to the organization as members, volunteers, and parents. This section contains items that will help you connect with alumni and friends and think about ways to engage with them once you have made contact.
