4-H Healthy Living CYFAR Project

The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program’s Communities, Youth, and Families at Risk (CYFAR) project engages K-6 youth in 4-H Healthy Living programming. This five-year project is an expansion of the 4-H SNAC Club model through a partnership between the  University of California (UC) 4-H, CalFresh Healthy Living UC (SNAP-Ed), Nevada (NV) 4-H, NV Expanded Food and Nutrition Extension Programs, NV SNAP-Ed, local schools and community partners.

Objectives of 4-H SNAC Clubs include building youth leaders and advocates for health and increasing access to 4-H programming in Latino communities. Specifically, the program aims to: (1) complete three to four 4-H healthy living projects annually at four low-income school sites, (2) engage youth in assessing, identifying and advocating for at least one change in their school or community that promotes increased access to physical activity and/or healthy foods or beverages, (3) enhance communication between parents and 4-H staff in order to promote greater understanding of youth and family participation in 4-H in undeserved communities, and (4) provide training through 4-H SNAC club school sites to increase parent and student involvement in countywide and statewide events to promote increased access to physical activity and/or healthy foods or beverages, and/or Policy, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) changes in their communities.
