Ramona Wranglers plants a garden for local group home

292737 The Issue:
This community service project was developed by members of the Ramona Wranglers 4H club to meet a need for healthy and affordable foods in a local group home for elderly and disabled individuals.

What has 4-H Done?:
Led by two youth, the club’s youth members designed and built a fenced garden area with raised beds and a chicken coop.  Working side by side with the residents, the 4-H youth planted a variety of vegetables, four fruit trees, and purchased a flock of young laying hens. To help prepare the residents to continue the care, the 4-H members also provided gardening and chicken care books. The Wrangler’s cooking group also went to the group home and cooked some egg dishes for the residents that were easy for the residents to do later on their own.

The Payoff:
The group home residents have benefited from the fresh healthy food, enjoyed their new outdoor activities, and have become quite attached to their new pet chickens. The new activities have helped the residents become more active and gain more mobility in their everyday lives. Additionally, besides learning more about building gardens and chicken coups, the 4-H members have also learned about the social aspect of the aging population and the need for service projects like this.
