Morgan, Freshwater 4-H Club, Humboldt County

Spotlight-morgan
Morgan is an eleven-year-old with a passion for animals. Ever since Morgan began her 4-H involvement in 2005, she has been working with sheep, horses, and pigs. Morgan and her two lambs earned first place in showmanship at the Humboldt County Fair during her first year showing sheep. This year, one of her lambs went to an auction in Medford, Oregon. She traveled there with her sheep leader and placed the highest bid on a lamb that she particularly liked. Morgan took responsibility for her purchase by filling out paperwork, making phone calls, and arranging to pick up her lamb over spring break.

Morgan’s experience with horses has been similarly successful. She is the junior leader for her club’s horse project. Morgan has exhibited her horse at multiple horse shows, including the 4-H Horse Show and APHA shows in Yreka, Central Point and Red Bluff. In addition to competing in various horse shows, Morgan enjoys presenting demonstrations about proper equine care. Morgan says, “I think the members appreciate having a peer present information in a way they can understand.”

Morgan was the country chairperson for both the 4-H Horse Show and the Large Animal Workshop, which were a mere month apart. Morgan created advertising material for the horse show, and she solidified entries and formatted the events. She then focused on the Large Animal Workshop, receiving 100 RSVPs.

This year, Morgan began working with pigs. She says pigs, “act a lot like dogs, except when they roll and root in the mud- that is disgusting.” Because it is her first year, Morgan says she’s getting a lot of help from her pig trainers and other experienced friends. Morgan has been enjoying this new livestock challenge.

Morgan had a productive and accomplished year in 4-H. She thanks the people around her for helping her: “I really appreciate all the time the club leaders and project leaders put into making 4-H a fun experience where you can also learn a variety of information and new skills.”
