Spotlight-Elizabeth
Elizabeth was a very busy girl this year, participating in eight 4-H project groups.  She especially enjoyed her livestock projects.  Elizabeth was a member of the sheep, goats, rabbits, and poultry groups.  In the sheep project, she raised a lamb and learned how to properly present it during showmanship events.  It was a tough year for Elizabeth’s goat project.  One of her goats died, and several others were stolen.  However, Elizabeth recovered from these setbacks to show a pygmy goat at the fair, and she also excelled at the written test.  Elizabeth used her fifty rabbits as breeding stock for her 4-H rabbit project.  Elizabeth also excelled at poultry, earning a Champion Large Fowl award.

Aside from her livestock involvement, Elizabeth also joined the arts and crafts, cooking, outdoor adventures, and sewing projects.  Arts and crafts was Elizabeth’s favorite project this year because, “it was fun, creative, and exciting.”  Elizabeth made glass-etched jars, no-sew blankets, and grommet snowmen.  In the cooking project, Elizabeth learned kitchen safety as well as food preparation.  She put her knowledge to good use when she helped make a spaghetti dinner fundraiser.  Elizabeth spent a lot of time working on her sewing project, and her hard work paid off when she won a rosette for her horse-themed apron at the County Fashion Revue.  Elizabeth explored many places in her outdoor adventures project this year, including Yosemite, the Merced River, and Avila Beach.

Elizabeth, who is in 6th grade, plans to continue in 4-H because, “My 4-H participation has improved my self-motivation, concern for others, and getting along with other people.”  She has big plans for next year.  Elizabeth has already been elected treasurer of her club.  She also wants to be a junior leader for the cooking group and the outdoor adventures group.  Elizabeth is well on her way to achieving her ultimate goal of becoming a veterinarian or an animal groomer!
