About California 4-H State Field Day
The annual California 4-H State Field Day is the largest and most comprehensive educational event for 4-H youth members and 4-H volunteer educators. Since 2002, 4-H'ers from throughout the state have come together to compete at the state level for various competitions. This family-friendly event is for all ages to participate.
Each contest and activity is coordinated by 4-H volunteers and youth. Event coordination and facility support is provided by the State 4-H Office.
The goal of the event is to provide a culminating experience for 4-H members in their year-long 4-H education in public speaking, textiles, plant sciences, photography, interview skills, and entomology.

Activities At California 4-H State Field Day
Exhibits and Booths
State 4-H Presentation Day (pre-qualification and pre-registration required): Volunteer evaluators provide written feedback to individual or teams of 4-H members on their presentations. Evaluation is criterion-based using a rubric. Types of presentations vary between demonstrations, prepared speech, interpretive reading, impromptu, and others.
Interview Contest (pre-registration required)
The Interview Contest is a Public Speaking contest that gives members an opportunity to practice the real-life skill of applying for a job. 2018 Interview Job Descriptions are updated.
State 4-H Fashion Revue (pre-qualification and pre-registration required)
Volunteer evaluators provide feedback on 4-H members’ clothing and accessory choices using criterion-based rubrics. Categories are Traditional, Consumer Science Purchased, Upcycled, See It Sew It Challenge, and Retro/Vintage Challenge. Open to the public are multiple service, craft, judging and fashion activities, and a fashion show. Organized by a committee of youth and adult volunteers who work throughout the year on all aspects of the event.
California 4-H State Film Festival (pre-registration required for competition; viewing is drop-in)
Provides a venue for teams of 4-H members to showcase their films. View a selection of previous year's films at http://www.youtube.com/user/California4H.
State 4-H Photography Contest (pre-registration required)
4-H members may submit two photographs in various categories.
Drop-in Activities (no pre-registration required)
Having an entomology project informs not only 4-H members but the public on how important insects are to our everyday life.
The objective of judging in the 4-H program is to help members grow in their ability to think, reason, and make logical and scientific judgments. Judging is about making choices and decisions. In each class, youth rank four items based on a standard; typically ten classes. There will also be a small non-competitive Primary Division for Primaries to get judging experience. They will receive a certificate of participation and a participation ribbon.
State 4-H Plant Science Contest
The contest is organized into three parts: judging, plant identification, and written test. The four highest ranking senior 4-H members are qualified to participate in the national contest.
In the morning, 4-H members may submit their logo design for the following year’s Field Day. In the afternoon, 4-H members vote on their favorite design.
Primary 4-H'ers are ages 5 to 9 years old. Age-appropriate activities help keep them included and engaged in State Field Day!
